Is
It Safe To Travel To Africa? Africa is a large continent (twice the size of the
United States) which is split up into some 46 independent countries, and
although it is true that various countries such as Angola, Sierra Leone and
Liberia are at present, or have in the past experienced civil war or some form
of unrest, the vast majority of African countries are quite
peaceful.
Naturally
no country can claim to be 100% safe, but by heeding warnings such as those of
the State Department and other institutions, as well as choosing a tour
operator that specializes in Africa, and is therefore knowledgeable about the
continent, one can minimize the inherent risks associated with world wide
travel.
Do I
Require A Lot Of Shots? The Southern African countries namely South Africa,
Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia as well as Kenya in East Africa currently
have no required shots for entry purposes. Tanzania, on the other hand does
require proof of a Yellow Fever shot. It is however advisable to check with
your Doctor, a Travel Clinic or the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta on
what they recommend. Malaria is prevalent across most of Africa and therefore
it is a strong recommendation that prophylactics be taken.
What
Types Of Safaris Are There? Safaris vary from rustic participation camping where
the guides and all the equipment is supplied, but the traveler is required to
assist with camp chores and putting up his or her own tent, to absolute luxury
fly-in safaris to magnificent permanent camps and lodges with private jets.
Safaris can have set departures where a group of people depart on a specific
date and travel together for a period of time. Alternatively, customized
safaris allow people the freedom to have a say in the design of their
itinerary, and to determine the date on which they would like to start their
travels. Special interest safaris are also available in the form of Camel
Safaris, Elephant Back Safaris, Canoeing Safaris and Bird Watching Safaris
etc.
